"The influences in John's illustrative techniques are deeply rooted in the magazine "Sports Illustrated". In it's earlier history, the magazine sported an art gallery of eye-catching action within each magazine. (In todays version, you might perhaps catch a caricature in the editorial pages, but rarely anymore are there artists like Bernie Fuchs, Bart Forbes and Leroy Neiman filling up an issue with any number of pages or covers.) One cover in particular was a painting of "The Boxer and the Slugger" the issue before the Big Fight on March 8th,1971 (between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali). That cover made me fall in love with both art and Ali. Color and movement.Action and involvement. What better audience to paint for then fellow sports fans like myself? By the way, what sports team do you love?
